September Employee Spotlight: Jessica Sears

What’s your role and how long have you been at Innovative?

I’m the senior writer and content coordinator, and I’ve been at Innovative for 4.5 years. I originally started as an editor before fully transitioning into my current role in February 2024.

What’s your favorite memory from Innovative?

Hands down, it has to be starting our book club. I posted on a whim in our Social channel two years ago, asking for advice on how to find one, and I was shocked when so many expressed interest in joining if I started one. We’ve read some amazing books (and plenty of duds), and I’ve loved getting to know our team more outside of work!

What’s the most challenging part of your job?

I’d love to say managing deadlines and my workload, but honestly, it’s the writer’s block. It’s unpredictable and makes it nearly impossible to form a coherent sentence.

When you’re not working, what can you be found doing?

I love a good story, so I’m usually consuming something via book, TV show, movie, podcast or an album. I love going to a coffee shop to read, creative writing/journaling, trying a new recipe (even if it fails), buying books I don’t have space for, and spending time with family, friends and my fiancé.

What movie, television or book character represents you the best?

I had to phone some friends for this, and I think I’m a combination of a few. I have the curiosity, love of learning and passion for causes of Hermione; the sense of humor and wit of Fleabag; and the general awkwardness of Chandler Bing — I’m constantly embarrassing myself and tend to respond to life with a dry humor.

What’s a song you currently have on repeat?

I’ve been loving Laufey’s new album A Matter of Time. And now that it’s fall, I’ve dusted off Red and Evermore by Taylor Swift, as well as Florence + the Machine’s discography.

What are some of your favorites (show, movie, book, musical artist, game, etc.)

Shows: I’ve rewatched The Office, Parks and Recreation and Friends more times than I can count. I also love Severance, Dark, Downton Abbey, Derry Girls and Fleabag.

Movies: (500) Days of Summer, Little Women (2019) and La La Land

Books: The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruíz Zafon and The Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier

Musical artist: It’s, of course, Taylor Swift. But I also love Florence + the Machine, HAIM, Hozier and Noah Kahan.

“Jessica has been a true partner in crime. We coordinate on several of my projects, and she’s always willing to help me if I need to take something off my plate or if I just need to decompress. She also has great taste in music, literature, local coffee places and so much more. Overall, Jessica is simply a wonderful person, and I’m glad she takes the time to turn stressful days into special ones with thought-provoking quizzes, posts in Slack’s social channels, and insight on all things zodiac and enneagrams. We are so lucky to have her!”
