Are you getting the most out of the digital edition of your publication, using all of its features to their full potential? That’s fantastic! Now it’s time to make sure you’re promoting it consistently, so that members can benefit from the work you’ve put into it.
Here are some easy strategies you can check off whenever you receive your digital edition links from your editorial project coordinator.
Step 1: Add the link to your website
Having a section on your website that includes back issues of your publication creates an incredible resource for your members. It also extends the longevity of each issue, meaning your advertising partners will continue getting views and clicks.
Your editorial project coordinator will provide a thumbnail you can use, making it easy to create a visual gallery linking to past issues.
Maybe you’d like to promote the most recent issue of the magazine right on your homepage. That’s where the auto-updating URL comes in. It’s a one-and-done link that defaults to the most recent issue of your publication. You can add it to your website once and never have to worry about it again.
Step 2: Write an e-blast
Let your members know via email that the new magazine is available online. You can set up a template with the same basic information and update it each issue. Here’s an example:
Subject: New issue: [Publication Name][Issue Date] is live!
Email body:
The new issue of [Publication Name] is live at [link]. In this issue:
[Teaser 1]
[Teaser 2]
[Teaser 3]
We can’t wait to hear your feedback on this issue! Reach out at [email] with your thoughts and what you’d like to see in future issues.
Including a call to action at the end of the e-blast motivates readers to further engage with the content.
If you have an existing e-newsletter, make sure to include a link to your magazine’s digital edition.
Step 3: Promote individual articles on social media
Promoting individual articles creates easy entry points for readers, who may be drawn in by a specific topic then continue flipping through your publication. It also helps you share relevant information you want to make sure gets traction, like an event with a registration deadline or a time-sensitive news article.
You can share articles individually from both the replica version and the responsive version of your magazine.
On the replica version (the one that looks exactly like the print edition), look for the three dots on the bottom right of the screen. In the menu that pops up, click Share. You can then choose to link to a specific page. Choose the page that your article appears on from the dropdown menu. Then, copy the resulting link. Now users will be directed to this article in the replica version.
Every article in the responsive view of your publication has a “share” link as well. It looks like an open rectangle with an arrow pointing up. Just like the menu that comes up with the replica version, this menu gives you the option of copying a link or sending the article directly to someone.
Each issue also has a download button so that you can save a copy of the PDF. If you want to just share the PDF of a specific article, simply open the PDF in Adobe Acrobat, go to Organize Pages, and delete everything except for the article you’d like to share.
